Of course I must forget

I.
Of course I must forget
Like a beach forgets the traffic
With the tide.
Like night forgets a candle
That has died.
Like a shirt on a radiator
Forgets the rain.
I must hold you, or forget.
A single moment from a train.

II.

Of course I must forget
Like oak forgets the summer
Every year.
Like clay forgets its possibilities
In fire.
Like a squirrel forgets
Where it buried its nuts.
Nuts.
I must forget.
